SEAPRO
A NEW CONCEPT IN UNDERWATER VIDEO HOUSINGS
DESIGNED BY DIVERS FOR DIVERS

WHY SEAPRO?
Greenaway Marine have been building professional underwater housings for still, motion picture and TV cameras for over 20 years. This mass of production knowledge has been passed into the production of our own range of compact video housings.
The SEAPRO housing system is adaptable in the long and short term, from the simple SP1 system up to the fully comprehensive SP8 system.
CONSTRUCTION
Aluminium tube body with optical grade perspex end plates.
All controls sealed by quad x 'o' rings, Sealed for long life.
Video light mounting bar with handles each side for easy control.
Depth rating - 85 metres. (Greater depth rating by quotation).
The main outer body is aircraft grade aluminium tube, not cast ali composite. Impact damage may dent or scratch the ends or side but the tube remains undamaged. The front port is recessed for protection, with the rear entry plate held in place by catches which exert 40lbs pull to compress the 'o' ring for failsafe operation for many years.
The optical grade front port allows the use of various wide angle and telephoto attachments on the SP3 type housing

SPECIAL OPTOLITE UNDERWATER CORRECTOR
The Optolite corrector used in the SP5/SP6 housings, we feel , is the finest underwater corrector available, its usability for underwater and surface use is unique.
Full technical information is available on the comparison sheet which covers flat, dome and Optolite port.
Greenaway Marine have the facilities to build housings for equipment for specialist tasks, please send your specification to us for a quote.
SEAPRO and OPTOLITE are trade marks of Greenaway Marine

SEAPRO
Dear Enquirer

Thank you for your valued enquiry for our range of products. We specialise in the design and manufacture of housings for underwater use.
We can house any video camera in the world and our catalogue shows our range of models from a simple flat port model with two controls costing only £695 up to our more detailed models with more controls, image magnifier, hydrophone and our unique "OPTOLITE PORT".
Flat ports, as on most housings, means the camera records 25% less angle of view when used underwater and every diver wants wide angle. The "OPTOLITE", designed exclusively by ourselves brings the wide angle back. It also means that your pictures will be perfectly sharp from infinity, right up to the lens, a perfect result for underwater use. This optic also gives perfectly sharp images above water and half in and half out as you have seen most recently on your TV underwater films.
Our housings, manufactured from high grade aluminium tube, precision machined, anodised and then powder coated for long life, must make them the most robust housings in the world. We regularly supply professional photographers, television companies and the film industry, customers who demand the best.
Lighting equipment, umbilical for surface monitoring, accessories and filters are additional and desirable items available for you to consider.
If you would like advice or any help in choosing the most suitable housing for your video camera, please telephone us. We are only too pleased to help in any way possible.
If we haven't your model video camera here, we use your camera and build a housing to your specification. There are now hundreds of video cameras on the market and we can house both new and older models. The video can be delivered to our showroom or sent to us by registered post or if you prefer, pack it carefully and we can arrange for our courier service to collect personally from your address. U.K, Mainland only. Extra cost is £20, including full transit insurance.
Purchases accepted by cash, cheque, Mastercard or Visa.
Detailed order form enclosed for your convenience.

We look forward to hearing from you and assure you of our desire to be of service.

UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY
STILLS AND VIDEO
___________________________________

You are a diver and you would like to record some of the wonderful sights we all see during our diving.

The first thought is to buy a simple still camera, possibly a disposable one, and perhaps a simple housing to enable you to take it diving. We've all done it and the results are probably appalling! Don't be disappointed, underwater still photography is one of the most difficult subjects for a still camera that there is. To do it successfully, you've got to invest in a good quality camera, an expensive housing with good underwater optics, and a powerful strobe. With lots of practise, you will start to get reasonable pictures.

Video however, is something different. Any reasonable quality video camera with a wide angle lens fitted into the Seapro housing with one of our corrected optics, Optolite Port, will give you superb results the first time you use it! Yes, the beauty of video is it's so simple. Nearly all video cameras today have autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, and it's just a matter of pointing the camera in the right direction and pressing the record button. Video tape is very cheap to use and of course like any video, you can wipe it and use it over and over again.

The other advantage of using video, apart from it being simple to use and comparatively cheap once you've got all your equipment, is that you can enjoy the dive. With still photography, you tend to swim around trying to decide, "Shall I take that picture, shall I take that picture...." and you tend to go through a dive continually trying to decide what to photograph.

With your video it's so cheap on tape that in lots of dives, you can just set the camera on it's maximum wide angle, hold the housing in front of you and look over the top of it using our top handle as an horizon to keep the picture reasonably level and enjoy the dive as you would without having to bother about videoing. You only tend to look through the viewfinder when you wish to take some close-ups and of course you want to centralise the image in your picture.

Zooming underwater is a very small portion of your underwater filming as generally you are swimming and moving hence unless something very exciting comes along, there really isn't any point in zooming. It's better to keep the camera in it's wide angle form, swim forward to your subject rather than try and zoom to bring the subject to you. It's generally very much more difficult to hold the housing still underwater than it is with your camera in air.

Because our Optolite Port will give you correct focus from infinity up to 1 cm in front of the taking lens, then you don't need to worry about pictures being out of focus. You can go right up to a subject knowing that everything will be pin sharp. The Optolite Port really does solve all your focusing problems as there will be no hunting of the camera focus to find a point of focus as on some models, everything will stay in focus the whole time.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO TAKE GOOD UNDERWATER VIDEO?

Colour Correction Filters for green water and blue water.

What's the difference?

If you don't use a filter and you dive in blue water, that means where there is coral, then everything will be a general blue colour. Put a blue water filter on, which happens to be red, and your colour balance will immediately be corrected. You will get all the reds, the yellows and an increased contrast for the general subject.

Any other water where it is not coral, then use a green water filter which happens to be a mauve colour, and this will have the same effect. Because video cameras are very light sensitive and will automatically compensate for the filter, you will be able to video in very poor light conditions. Your own eyesight will consider subjects in a very dim, unrecordable light but you will be remarkably surprised when you play back your video and find that the camera has recorded far more than you can see.

DO I NEED UNDERWATER LIGHTING?

When you get very low contrast conditions, fairly deep, wreck diving, or close-ups in very poor light then of course underwater lighting brings back all the colour correctly. Good underwater lighting can be expensive. We know that unless you purchase something powerful and with wide angle lamps, it really is a waste of time filming with a lamp not powerful enough.

Our Seapro range have 12v 50w Tungsten Halogen bulbs of wide angle form, around 65°, hence using a pair of these on their flexible arms on your housing is like handling a pair of 12v car headlamps! They will give you a superb colour balance and illumination for your underwater subject.

We trust this short resume on underwater video photography will help you to make a decision to use underwater video as what a superb record it makes of the exciting underwater world.

SEAPRO

Greenaway Marine offer the following notes to new underwater video photographers who perhaps do not possess a video camera yet and are about to purchase and are confused by the vast choice.

We have "no axe to grind" in suggesting models from the vast range available. When you go to a video shop, they tend to have agencies for particular models hence, they will always tell you that their model is the best!!

Video Cameras for Underwater Use

The prime concern for selection of a camera for underwater use is a zoom lens that gives you good wide angle in it's normal form. The reason being that as you are probably aware, when a video camera is taken underwater and footage is shot through a flat port, you lose 25% of your angle of view due to refraction of the water. The same effect as your face mask. If you've got a camera which does not have a very wide angle lens in air then, with a flat port on a housing, you are not going to get a very wide angle of view underwater. Due to visibility underwater, you need to get in as much width of the picture as you possibly can. Our Optolite Port brings back into the same angle underwater as you get in air but it will not increase the angle of view of the lens.

With the current range of cameras, you can now obtain a general range with 3.9mm, 4.0mm, 4.5mm focal length at wide angle settings. These sizes are ideal. A few years ago and you will find if you have an older video camera, that the minimum focal length on wide angle was perhaps 6 or 7mm and that meant buying an additional wide angle converter to use a camera. Really these are no longer needed if you have a camera with a 3.9mm lens behind an Optolite Port.

Video 8, Hi 8, VHS-C, Super-VHS-C and DVC (Digital)

The first range of those formats when played back through your normal television set, you will see very little difference in the result. Yes, play back through a high resolution monitor and the Hi 8 and the Super-VHS-C and Digital will be both the sharpest result. Go for Digital to be able to use with your computer. Absolutely superb results and of course the ability to take stills off at a realistic price.

Ask anyone in the street to name a video camera? The first word they will say is "Sony". Sony is a big name but they only have about 20% of the video market. Canon, Panasonic, JVC, Sharp, Hitachi, Samsung to name a few, are all very good manufacturers and there are pros and cons for using either system.

I hope the foregoing comments give you a basic idea of which way you wish to go.

Video Cameras

To repeat ourselves, we have "no axe to grind" on choice but certain cameras fit into underwater housings we manufacture more easily than others hence, the following are a few suggestions which fulfil all the criteria we've mentioned.

SEAPRO U.K. is one of the Greenaway Group

Monitor Screens

The side opening monitor screen now available on a considerable number of cameras, we are quite often able to build a housing with monitor screen fully open or partially. The Sony PC series of 1 - 100 models we can give you the screen fully open and on quite a number of models the monitor screen can be open at around 45°, which is still very easily viewable through the back of our housings. Please talk to us to request that system and we can explain if we can do this for you without having to provide a very large diameter tube. The extra cost is just a nominal charge.

Digital Cameras

Yes, you want to do some serious video making for sale or television and film work. We recommend the Panasonic NV DX110 and GS 120/200, Sony TRV950 and Canon XM2. All 3CCD models. These are compact cameras in size hence the underwater housing is easier to handle and we have already found them extremely popular world wide. The Sony DCR-VX1000, VX2000 is of course another professional model digital video camera producing superb results. To compensate for the viewfinder, we produce a magnifier that fits to the viewfinder of the camera to enhance underwater viewing. We build housings for all models.

We hope the foregoing comments may assist in choosing a video camera for your underwater photography and for general use and of course we have not mentioned every model. If there is a camera you have already or a model you fancy buying, then please telephone us and we can certainly advise if we can build a housing for you to give good operation and to make sure you get good underwater video results.

SP12 SEAPRO COLOUR VIDEO MONITOR

SEAPRO

SEAPRO SP9
The conversion to your housing, to take a video output to the surface, expands the capability of your video system. It enables you to view what is being videoed by the diver when he is say 20 metres down and you will have a picture on your video monitor which you can record on to your VCR.
For pool training and safety your surface video output will let you see it all. Your video housing takes on a new use, i.e. you can lower the housing complete with camera down on a line to the sea bed, to see if you are over the wreck, without needing to dive. You get an immediate check on visibility and know if you are in the right location before kitting up and diving.
The cable drum keeps the 50 metres of cable ready for instant use with the Bulgin splash proof connector taking the video signal to your video monitor or VCR.
PICTURE 1. Separate components. SEAPRO housing, metres cable and drum. Drum to monitor/VCR.

PICTURE 2.

SEAPRO

SEAPRO SOUND (HYDROPHONE)

A Hydrophone is a device for picking up sound in water. Everything from your bubbles to dolphin whales 'clicks' and submarine solar 'pings'.

The Seapro Hydrophone fits into the front recessed part of your video housing. The internal lead plugs into the microphone socket on your video camera and when you press 'record' you get live underwater sound.

Film your dive boat and hear the propeller, cutting and powering its way through the water. Most divers wear a hood for protection against the cold which also cuts out sound. The Seapro Hydrophone will bring another dimension to your video recordings.

Two hydrophones are available.

The most popular is the Seapro SP21, it fits the standard Sony camcorders and is powered from the video camera, it automatically cuts out the video camera microphone when connected.
The Seapro Hydrophone can be fitted to most makes of video camera housing.

SPECIFICATION SEAPRO VIDEO HOUSING for
PANASONIC DIGITAL CAMERAS
CONTROLS Marine grade stainless steel glands with Quad X 'O' rings. Stainless steel shaft with oversize control knobs. Mechanical controls to enable on sight service with minimal tools. Mechanical control unaffected by moisture, condensation, temperature or humidity.
BODY Aircraft grade aluminium with nitrile 'O' rings on all serving surfaces.

OPTICAL PORT FITTED Optolite Port fitted to give the ability to video in air, in water or half in and half out. Housing can be used with or without wide angle lens, space has been left for colour correction filter.
Additional video links to surface an be included if specified when ordering.

Flat ports, as on most housings, means the camera records 25% less angle of view when used underwater and every diver wants wide angle. When a flat port is used underwater, the angle of view is reduced by 25% and you only have one point of focus. The SEAPRO housing is fitted with an "OPTOLITE PORT" which has a flat front and you have one focus setting for in air and underwater, it can therefore be used half in and half out of the water. You focus on the image created inside the OPTOLITE PORT, thereby putting you in focus over a very great range. The autofocus capability of the camera will only need slight adjustment to keep in focus from macro to infinity, as the OPTOLITE PORT has a vast depth of focus. This enables the diver to take wide angle close-ups with creatures sitting on the corrector and the divers in focus in the background. The OPTOLITE PORT is the finest underwater corrector available.DEPTH RATING 100 metres

SEAPRO OPTOLITE CORRECTED PORT

The SEAPRO OPTOLITE PORT is exclusive to Greenaway Marine.
This underwater optical corrector enables the video camera to be used above water, below water, even half in and half out of water.
The depth of focus is outstanding, being from a few millimetres in front of the Optolite port to infinity in most cases. You can zoom in air or underwater, it increases edge definition by producing a sharper image. When used with Hi 8 or Super VHS video cameras you have broadcast lookalike picture quality.
HOW DO THE FLAT PORT, DOME PORT AND OPTOLITE PORTS COMPARE?
FLAT PORT You need to focus for all shots, modern auto focus video cameras do this very well.
SEAPRO use flat ports for this reason.
Your image will fall off and have barrel distortion at very wide angle lens settings, but underwater you rarely have straight lines to show this distortion, plus most of the time the depth of field hides the fall off. If you use high quality wide angle lenses the problem becomes less noticeable.
You do, however, have your angle of view reduced by 25% when using a flat port and you have no depth of focus.
You can produce a half in half out shot, but the water air interface will be out of focus, producing an unsightly line across your image.
DOME PORT The main use of the dome port is to restore the angle of view of the lens when underwater. It acts as a clear window when on the surface. However, when underwater it produces an apparent image that you must focus on to produce a sharp picture. This means you must focus at approximately 12" underwater. If you move the housing out of water in to the air, the camera will still be focused at the apparent image at approximately 12". This will mean the in air picture will be out of focus. Modern video cameras will re-focus to give a sharp image, this usually loses the shot you were after when coming from underwater to the surface.
Some housing manufacturers fit a +4 diopter close up lens between the dome and the wide angle lens, this produces a good image underwater but will always be out of focus in air.
To produce a half in and half out shot you must use a 8" diameter dome. As most video camera housings are only 7" in diameter this is impractical and expensive.
Dome ports also have two further drawbacks, they are exposed, protruding from the main housing body, just waiting to be scratched or knocked and they are also very susceptible to flare when looking towards the surface.

The Optolite port overcomes all these problems.

SEAPRO
OPTOLITE PORT

This port has a flat front and is therefore less likely to get damaged. You have one focus setting for in air and underwater, it can therefore be used half in half out. It is smaller than a dome, if you are correcting for a wide angle lens, hence less exposed also reducing the chances of flare underwater.

You may need a slight focus adjustment for extreme macro shots, but with most video cameras the auto focus will set itself once.

The Optolite Port has vast depth of focus, you are able to produce wide angle close ups even with creatures sitting on the corrector and sun in focus on the surface!

If you require the highest optical quality the SEAPRO Optolite Port is the one to go for, the flat port is the next best compromise.
Optolite is a specially formulated plastic originally produced as a substitute for lenses in high quality optical instruments. It is now being used by Greenaway Marine exclusively in the production of the Optolite Corrected Port. The units are mounted into an aircraft grade aluminium mount which has been anodised for maximum protection.
Ports can be interchangeable if required, at extra cost. Most are fitted as a permanent unit.

SEAPRO WATER DETECTOR
The SEAPRO Water Detector enlightens you to the smallest ingress of water.
Video cameras DO NOT LIKE WATER.
You mount the sensor probes in the lowest part of your video camera housing with the warning light, an 8 mm diameter red LED, near your viewfinder or clearly visible inside the housing.
The red LED will glow even if you moisten your finger and touch the sensor.
Fresh or salt water will produce a very bright light easily visible even in tropical waters.
The unit is powered by a lithium battery which will last for about 10 years, the Seapro Water Detector only uses power when activated, it can be left in the housing for constant protection.
The Seapro Water Detector is easily fitted by double sided sticky pads and the sensor and wire held in position by sticky backed wire grips, supplied with the unit.
The cost is minimal compared with replacing a flooded video or still camera.
Specification: Indicator: 8 mm red light emitting diode.
Power: Lithium battery (10 year shelf life).
Tube Dimensions: 28 mm diameter. 55 mm length.

COLOUR CORRECTION FILTERS

Greenaway Marine have specially designed and manufactured COLOUR CORRECTING FILTERS, for blue water and green water for available light video and still photography.

With sunlight and a SEAPRO filter you capture the natural colours of the oceans corals, fish and other aquatic life in the sea, lakes, streams and rivers. The filters neutralise the underwater blue or green cast, so that the true colours which already exist can be recorded on film or video.

The filters come in the following sizes:
37 mm Fits Sony TR series.
43 mm Fits Panasonic range.
46 mm Fits a large range of video cameras. SHEET FILTERS
49 mm Check your video or still camera for filter sizes.
52 mm As above. 4½" square (11.5cm)
55 mm As above. UNMOUNTED
58 mm Nikonos 35 mm, 28 mm and 80 mm lenses.
62 mm Nikon etc.
67 mm Nikonos 20 mm lens.
72 mm Pro video cameras.
77 mm Pro video cameras, also medium format cameras.

USING THE COLOUR CORRECTION FILTERS

You must first decide the type of water you are diving in, as a guide British, Atlantic and Mediterranean waters will require the Green Water Correction Filter, i.e. the water where you will not find coral reefs. Most areas of the world where you will find coral reef formation will require the Blue Water Correction Filter. It is always worth checking, this is only a rough guide.
The filters screw directly into the filter mount on the camera lens, in the case of the Nikonos camera, you should fit the filter when underwater, or ask for the filter to be supplied with a pressure compensation hole drilled.
Water acts a continuous filter, the deeper you go underwater the more colour is lost to this natural filtering system, red, oranges and the yellows are quickly lost from your visible spectrum. The SEAPRO Filters will help to return those colours lost, by first filtering out the blue or green predominant cast and then enhancing the colours lost, giving you the true natural colours.
